Build your Joomla site locally and faster… Extended.
Matt wrote an excellent post on time-saving tools for designing and developing your Joomla!. He’s right, you can save substantial time by installing a local server environment. As well, these tools provide a great platform for learning. Since he’s the Mac pro, I thought it would be of use to include some handy Windows tools…
JSAS is a light-weight, reliable, and quick way to install all your necessary servers, databases, and Joomla! files. This downloads in seconds and is up and running in no time on your local machine. What many people don’t realize is that you can actually use JSAS to develop/design several other open source apps such as WordPress or Drupal.
Here’s a post written a few months back on using JSAS to develop locally as well as uploading your entire site your live servers.

**JSAS will be releasing a Mac version soon.

Xampp is another prefered Windows bundled server. This free package is much more robust than JSAS, but also carries more weight. Xampp allows for easy PHP and Apache configuration as well as server updates and extensions such as Tomcat, Java, etc. A like-bundle is Wamp, which has much of the same functionality and features.

Bitnami is another great resource for bundled open source apps. This company has taken several apps, such as Joomla!, Drupal, WordPress, Alfresco, Liferay, and more.. and packaged them with all necessary servers and made into a Windows executable. All you do is download the applicatin of choice, install and you’re done.
